PRE-DEPARTURE CHECKLIST FOR AUSTRALIA

1. Apply for your student visa:

  • Confirm that you meet all the conditions.
  • Pay your tuition fees and student health cover (OSHC) as stated on your Letter of Offer.
  • Receive your electronic Confirmation of Enrolment (eCoE).

2. Contact the appropriate authorities:

  • Reach out to your nearest Australian High Commission/Embassy or Institute overseas representative/agent.
  • Lodge an application for your student visa.

3. Book your airline ticket:

  • Ensure that you arrive at your institute on time for orientation and enrollment.

4. Prepare to leave your home country:

  • Decide what to bring.
  • Plan your finances.
  • Familiarize yourself with the health checks required to enter Australia.
  • Know what to expect upon arrival.

5. Get informed about your Institute:

  • Take note of orientation and enrollment dates.
  • Remember important academic dates.
  • Become familiar with Institute policies and procedures.

6. Get to know your new surroundings:

  • Explore the facilities available on and near the campus.
  • Discover events and activities in your city and how to get involved.

BOOK YOUR AIRLINE TICKET Book your airline ticket as soon as you have accepted your place at your proposed institute. Seats are in high demand before the start of the semester/trimester. Make sure to allow sufficient time for your visa application to be processed so that you can arrive at your institute on time for orientation. Attendance for the full duration of the orientation program is mandatory.

WHAT ARE MY VISA CONDITIONS? To maintain your visa, you must:

  • Study full-time while in Australia.
  • Maintain satisfactory academic progress.
  • Maintain a valid enrollment at your Institute/University and inform them of any changes in your visa status.
  • Immediately notify your Institute of any change in your Australian address.
  • Have enough funds to cover tuition fees and living expenses.
  • Limit work to a maximum of 40 hours per fortnight during study periods (unlimited hours during breaks).
  • Maintain valid Overseas Student Health Cover.
  • Obtain a release letter from your original education provider if you plan to transfer between registered education providers within the first six months of starting your principal course.

PREPARING TO LEAVE YOUR HOME COUNTRY

DOCUMENTS: Bring the following documents with you to your institute/University when you arrive for orientation and enrollment:

  • Passport (check the expiry date).
  • Letter of Offer (essential for enrollment).
  • Original or certified copies of your qualifications.
  • Driver’s license (if applicable).
  • Medical history or prescriptions for ongoing medication.

CLOTHING: Consider the climate when packing:

  • September to February are the warmer months (18 to 30 degrees Celsius). Lightweight t-shirts and shorts are suitable.
  • March to August are the colder months (7 to 19 degrees Celsius). A warm waterproof jacket is recommended.

FURNISHINGS AND HOUSEHOLD ITEMS: Not all accommodations (except for homestays) provide furniture or household items. You can easily purchase necessary items from a variety of stores. Secondhand household items are also available at affordable prices.

GETTING TO KNOW YOUR CITY Explore the city you will be living in:

  • Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, Hobart, Canberra, and Darwin.
  • Visit the provided links or search for more information on what’s available and happening in your city.

PLAN YOUR FINANCES

ESTABLISHMENT COSTS: Arrive in Australia with at least A$700 and have access to a further A$2000 for your first week. Avoid carrying large amounts of cash and use travelers’ cheques, bank drafts, or money orders instead.
